Subject : Optimizing PV systems : towards better efficiency and faultless performance.

Director of thesis : Mr Thierry LEMENAND

Abstract

Photovoltaic (PV) systems hold great potential for enabling the transition to a carbon-neutral future in electricity generation. Due to the abundance of solar irradiation and the static, silent operation of PV systems, they can be a powerful alternative energy source. However, PV systems are often confronted with various failure scenarios, mainly due to undesirable environmental conditions. Partial shading conditions in particular have serious consequences for PV modules. Against this background, the aim of this study is to first present a thorough and recent literature review that concretely clarifies the irradiation-related negative impacts on PV system performance. Consequently, four studies are established to compensate for these effects, starting with a new approach to dynamic optimization of PV panel tilt angle. In addition, a complete solar charger is designed for off-grid PV systems, optimizing the charging process of energy storage systems. In addition, a new modification of the Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm, based on the pathogenic mechanisms of Type 1 Diabetes (T1D), is developed, aimed at extracting the maximum available power from a PV array under severe partial shading conditions. Finally, a feasibility study is being carried out to test the applicability of solar trackers in relation to the geographical areas in which PV systems are installed.
